How to remodel your Bathroom(s)

Sometimes I do a bit or residential design. I was recently asked to help update a couple of bathrooms in a house in Lewes on one of our lovely crescents. The bathrooms in question were dated, the bathroom in particular had a ‘ye olde bath’ set up with dark timber surround.

Design Brief

The brief was to modernise the bathrooms and make the work with the needs of the current owners of the house. The most important element of the brief was to create a main bathroom that would have a bath, dedicated shower and vanity unit that befits a house of this size. They have two teenagers, one of which had a bedroom adjacent to the bathrooms. Part of brief was to create a shower room that would be dedicated to the teenager’s needs.

My approach to situations like this is to look at what benefit there might be in moving walls around. This exercise created options that reduced the shower room to it’s simplest elements whilst leaving enough space the the main bathroom to have all of the windows / natural light and wow factor.

The Main Bathroom

Below is the plan and some photos of the main bathroom. The joy of having large windows on two aspects of the room is that we were able to darken the finishes which in turn makes the space atmospheric when it is dark outside. Moving the wall between the two rooms has flipped the principle bathroom from one side to the other. and the airing cupboard is still accessed via the main bathroom which makes sense for practical reasons.

Shower Room

The shower room is generous with a large shower and more than enough space for the shampoo and cosmetics necessary. One element we had to sacrifice with the new design was natural light. We have done our best to make the space well lit and used warm and light wall finishes to help brighten the room.

I enjoyed making these spaces work better for this family and by all accounts the new design is a big improvement. If you are struggling to make sense of a house that has a layout stuck in the past feel free to get in touch.
